De-googlizing Android
Sorry, folks, Android can't be de-googlized. These supposedly de-googlized variants let a few hardcore nerds opt out of Google's direct spying and advertising, but they do nothing to pull developers away from the Android ecosystem, so they still benefit Google.

If you really want to hurt Google, figure out a way for developers to make money off of apps in F-Droid, to the extent that they choose to remove their apps from the Play Store.

@freakazoid I'm curious how many developers are really making money off of app sales in the Play Store.
The ones making money seem like largely free apps that connect to services which require subscription.

@ted I think a lot of developers are really just playing the lottery, with all the associated irrational behavior. Everyone thinks their app is going to be successful where others have failed, otherwise they wouldn't do it in the first place.
A free software funding ecosystem probably isn't going to pull those developers away, but it could potentially create a healthy and vibrant enough ecosystem to really start to eat into Google's power.
